Happy Birthday Oldie

Dr. Robert Yim AKA "Oldie"
I always talk about my friend Suse and have done some posts on her. Today I feel like giving a shout out to her father. He is perhaps the most humble and kind gentleman I have ever met. There is a reason Suse is a wonderful human being, and it starts with her parents. I highlight Oldie today because I stumbled upon the fact that today is his birthday! He will be a young and spry 90 something year old. Just look at the smile!

His favorite story of Suse involves his birthday, but he never told me when his birthday was. I stumbled upon an article about him yesterday, coincidentally, and it mentions his birthday is Sept. 4th. Timing is everything. You can read that article below. It is worth the read.

Dr. Yim was a pediatrician in the Baltimore area for many years. He didn't retire until he was 75. His patients and their parents loved him, at least that is what I am told and have read. Dr. Yim loved them back, almost as much as he loves his own family. He wrote a book a few years ago. Not a ground breaking piece of literature, but a moving memoir of stories of his life and mostly his family. It is called "Sleeping with Mae West, and other stories". You can find it online on Amazon or on Barnes and Nobles. I recommend it for a light bedtime story read.

Happy Birthday Oldie!!! May you have many many more!

Loving Kindness

Live by these words!

As I move into my new condo and unpack boxes, I have come across a book that was giving to me when I left Utah. Given to me by my dear friend Cammy. It is called Loving Kindness. In it's first page before the foreword there is a poem. It says it is Buddha's words on loving and kindness. I feel it is appropriate and important to share that poem now, with all the horrific events of the past week. First Charlottesville. Now Barcelona. And the many other attacks before and attacks that I am sure will follow. I feel the best way to combat these incidents is to spread Love and Kindness. Yes, it can be extremely difficult to think in these terms some days and especially toward people who spread hate and violence. But remember what Nelson Mandela has said in the past... shared by Barack Obama this past week...

No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” - Nelson Mandela

So, I say let's go out and teach love. Spread Love and Joy wherever we go. Even to those who appear that they don't want love. To those who would rather spread hate and violence. I, in my heart, just can not believe that is what those people really want. They just can't! So go out and hug a "hate monger" and let them know you choose love. Go out and hug an "alt-right" individual and let them know you choose love and kindness. Go out and hug anyone and everyone who will allow it without confrontation or protest. Let's teach the whole world! Will you join me?

Whether you live by religion or not. Whether you believe in Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad or some other figure. I feel the following words are important, profound, and worthy to live by.
Now here is the wisdom of Buddha

This is what should be done
By those who are skilled in goodness,
And who know the path of peace:
Let them be able and upright,
Straightforward and gentle in speech.
Humble and not conceited,
Contented and easily satisfied.
Unburdened with duties and frugal in their ways.
Peaceful and calm, and wise and skillful,
Not proud and demanding in nature.
Let them not do the slightest thing
That the wise would later reprove.
Wishing: in gladness and in safety,
May all beings be at ease.
Whatever living beings there may be;
Whether they are weak or strong, omitting none,
The great or the mighty, medium, short or small,
The seen and the unseen,
Those living hear and far away,
Those born and to-be-born---
May ALL beings be at ease.
Let none deceive another,
Or despise any bein in any state.
Let none through anger or ill-will
Wish harm upon another.
Even as a mother protects with her life
Her child, her only child,
So with a boundless heart
Should one cherish all living beings;
Radiating kindness over the entire world:
Spreading upward the skies,
And downward to the depths;
Outward and unbounded,
Freed from hatred and ill-will.
Whether standing or walking, seated or lying down,
Free from drowsiness,
One should sustain this recollection.
This is said to be the sublime abiding.
By not holding to fixed views,
The pure-hearted one, having clarity of vision,
Being freed from all sense desires,
Is not born again into this world.
-Buddha

Morgan's Wonderland. A place for EVERY BODY!!!

I HAVE TO GO HERE....

Morgan and her father on the left. Two kids playing together on the right.
Below is a short video about a waterpark in San Antonio. It is a place to behold, I am sure. It is a place other places should be modeled after, I am sure! I can't wait to visit someday!

http://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/whats-hot/dad-creates-dollar32-million-theme-park-for-his-beloved-daughter-with-special-needs/ar-AApJbiY?li=BBnb7Kz

Yes, I separated the words every and body on purpose. I love it when people use their own "situations" to make the world a better place for every body else! This dad has clearly done that!
Yes, this park was designed and built to accommodate people with all kinds of disabilities, but it is also made for people with all kinds of abilities. Every body is accepted! That is what I love the most about it! As the world should be, every body should be accepted everywhere, everyday, every time!

My favorite quote from the video says it all in my opinion...

"All we wanted to do was bring people who have special needs and people who don't have special needs together and play"

Amen! Let's ALL play together! That's what I always say too! And while we are at it, let's all work together, and sing together, and HUG together!

Mothers. True Peaceful Warriors

My mom loved flowers
God Bless ALL Peaceful Warrior Mothers! My friend Guillaume turned me onto a book called "Way of the Peaceful Warrior". It was written in 1980, but I had never heard of it. It is where he learned the phrase Here and Now. (see previous post). The library didn't have the original book, but it had a book called "Wisdom of a Peaceful Warrior" which takes excerpts from the original book and explains the learning behind them. A good education for anyone who is on a spiritual journey.

The best I have learned from it is... A Peaceful Warrior is someone who lives their life peacefully with Love, Compassion, Kindness. But is a Warrior when it comes to "fighting" for a cause. That made me realize My Mother was indeed a Peaceful Warrior. I never realized it until I read this book. She lived her life with total love for her family and especially her children. She would be a Warrior and fight for us, no matter what the fight was. I miss her dearly and only wish I would have recognized these traits in her while she was alive so I could tell her how much I love her for being a Peaceful Warrior! Maybe her spirit can hear me now? I sure hope so.
She loved her grandchildren and  children by proxy too!
Now that I know a little about what it means to be a Peaceful Warrior, I realize I know a lot of mothers who are Peaceful Warriors, and they probably don't even realize it. Too humble to recognize it in themselves, which is another trait of a Peaceful Warrior from what I gather. So I say we tip are hats to ALL of the Peaceful Mother Warriors out there today living the Way of the Peaceful Warrior.

Meet Guillaume

Guillaume! What a character. What a man. What a clown!
Guillaume Vermette. Look him up on FB! https://www.facebook.com/ClownHumanitaire/
He tells stories on his professional FB that will make you laugh, smile, cry, think, and wonder. A lot like Humans of New York, but even better  in my opinion. His stories are all about humanitarians. Himself and friends he has met along the way. He is the best humanitarian clown I know, hands down.
A total Clown. Guillaume can even make the horses laugh!
Just over a year ago, He was living in Canada and running a clown business. He was making a decent living and able to travel a little on humanitarian clown trips, like the Patch Adams Tour in November and the Beslan trip in April. But Guillaume wanted to do more! So, he sold his business and gave away most of his possessions and now travels the world as a humanitarian clown.

Guillaume and a friend at a refugee camp.
I am not sure of all of his travels this past year, which is why you have to look him up on FB and read for yourself. But I do know He lived in a refugee camp in Greece for a couple of months. Living amongst the refugees in tents and clowning with them during the day to try and lift their spirits and give them hope.

He did the annual Clown Tour in Russia with Patch and Maria. He went to Thailand for 6 to 8 weeks and taught children circus performances at a camp called "Spark! Circus"

He most recently was in Beslan with yours truly, making the kids there squeal with delight and craving his attention. They chased him, they hugged him, they called out his name down the hallways wherever he went. "Guillaume! Guillaume!". Even while I was clowning with kids in "my own" special moments, they would look at me and ask "Gdye Guillaume?". Which is Russian for "Where's Guillaume?".

The kids of Beslan chasing Guillaume on his unicycle
For the past year he has basically lived out of a backpack, all so he can spread laughter and joy to the world. He relies solely on donations to fund his trips and relies on the kindness of strangers for food and sometimes even shelter. I think he told me he spent 9000 dollars total this past year. That includes ALL of his expenses.. travel, food, etc. I can't begin to imagine living on 9000 dollars a year, and still be able to travel the world. He has done it and I have never seen him look happier!
Check out his website for some great photos and videos. It is all in French, but even with the language difference you can't help but smile at Guillaume!

Keep spreading the Love and Joy my friend!!!

Teacher

Tarkan was a great teacher I am sure!
One of my favorite stories from the tragedy of Beslan is about Tarkan. It is such a sad, yet inspiring, story. At age 89 Tarkan was in the school at the time of the siege. I am not sure if he was still teaching at that age or volunteering or just an honorary guest. None the less he was there.

The story told to me was... The terrorist told Tarkan that he could go home. Apparently a sign of "respect" for the oldest person in the room. It is strange how culture plays a part in life, even amongst terrorists and tragic times. In a strange way, it showed that the terrorists were actually human. Not humane of course, but still humans. What a strange and bewildering species we are eh?

Anyway, Tarkan looked them in the eye and responded

"I will not leave without my children".

It gets to me every time I think of those words. This was truly a GREAT man! His greatness was reinforced to me on this visit. A young lady, in her 70s perhaps, saw me at his grave. She came up and pointed to him and then to herself and said "My first director". She didn't speak much English, but I understood that he was the director of the school when she was a student, many years before the tragedy. The look in her eyes was one of love and admiration for a man who has been dead for 12 plus years. She still visits his grave to pay respects. Amazing to me. How many of your teacher's or principal's graves do you visit? I visit none, and now I am a little ashamed of that fact.

If you have a teacher or a principal that you love and admire, I suggest that you let them know that. Now, while they are still alive! I have a few teachers I loved and admired growing up and I thank them all for the wisdom bestowed upon me. I would like to thank them all now, whether they know about it or not. I would especially like to thank Mrs. Bennett! If you ever have a teacher like Mrs. Bennett, consider yourself might lucky. I sure do!

Another Angel

Aza is surely an angel

Every year I go to Beslan I learn new stories. Some are sad, some are actually sweet, some are inspiring, and some I can't even begin to describe. This year's story was about this young lady who was killed just a month before her 12th birthday. Why had I not heard her story before? I have no idea other than to say there are too many stories to tell and learn in my week long visit once a year. I am confident though, that Aza is now an angel somewhere high above us all.

Apparently Aza wrote a poem in August of 2004, unbeknownst to anyone else. She was killed in September of 2004. Her mother found her poem sometime after her death. A friend of mine loosely translated it to me. Someday I hope to get the full poem translated if possible.

The gist of the translation was... in her own words...

"My time has come to leave this place. I am ready. It is not too late and it is not too early. It is just time. There is a place in Heaven waiting for me."

This is a small excerpt of her poem. If anyone can translate it, I would be happy to know what it is exactly.
That is the best I can remember what my friend told me. It may not be word for word what she wrote, but it is close. It is always amazing to me when people have "premonitions" of their own death. There are too many stories like hers that make it impossible not to believe there is something else out there beyond this lifetime.

The most powerful portion of her poem, in my eyes, is the fact she says "it is not too early and it is not too late." I don't know if we all have our deaths already recorded in time. That is even far fetched for me to believe. I do believe some spirits "know" or can "sense" their time is up. Not too early, and Not too late. There is a place in Heaven waiting.  I only hope her parents can find some comfort in those words.
